Professor Andy Neely

Professor Andy Neely is Deputy Director of AIM, the Advanced Institute for Management Research and Chairman of the Centre for Business Performance at Cranfield School of Management. Previously he has held appointments at Cambridge University, where he was a Fellow of Churchill College, London Business School, Nottingham University, where he completed his PhD and British Aerospace. In 2005 he was appointed a Fellow of the Sunningdale Institute. Andy's research interests encompass organizational performance and performance measurement. He has completed studies on the design, deployment, operation and maintenance of measurement systems and is widely recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on the subject. His current research interests encompass the performance impact of measurement systems, measurement in the public sector, how organizations can make better use of the data they have access to and the drivers and determinants of productivity. Andy has authored over 100 books and articles, including "Measuring Business Performance", published by the Economist and "The Performance Prism", published by the Financial Times. He has won numerous awards for his academic research and chairs the Performance Measurement Association, an international network for those interested in the performance measurement and management.

Liane Hornsey joined Google as EMEA HR & Staffing Director in January 2006. Before joining Google Liane was Group HR Director for Lastminute.com and prior to that for NTL. The majority of her working life however has been in the entertainment industry, working for BMG Sony for 8 years as HR Director UK, VP HR EMEA as well as other senior management roles in the Benelux and Nordic regions. She started her career in sales, has worked in marketing, operations and customer service but has found that she enjoys the broad organisational view and involvement in company-wide issues that HR offers, and so sees herself firmly rooted in the function for the future! Liane will discuss how the unique company culture and innovation at Google have led to high levels of staff retention and how Google are planning to sustain the campus feel within the organisation.
Sally Jacobson is currently Group Director, Human Resources at London & Quadrant Housing Trust. Sally oversees 1000 staff and is responsible for HR, training, facilities management, TUPE transfers and customer care. Under Sally’s management London & Quadrant have received the following prestigious awards, Investors in People, Charter Mark and Age Positive Champion. The group has been placed in the in the prestigious Sunday Times Top 100 Best Companies to Work for, for the last 4 years. Tower Homes, part of the L&Q Group was placed at No. 1 in the list in 2006, and won a special award for work life balance. We are also listed in the Financial Times 50 Best Workplaces in the UK 2006 and have appeared on the list for the last 3 years. Sally’s professional background began in the NHS starting as a student nurse in 1970 in Nottingham and progressing to Senior Nurse Manager at the Maudsley Hospital prior to joining London & Quadrant.
David has enjoyed a rich and varied career in Human Resources. Since joining Lucas Industries as a Graduate Trainee, he has built an HR department from scratch for Transport Development Group; was the youngest Group Manager at H J Heinz; and was European Director of Recruitment and Leadership Planning for SmithKline Beecham where he ran a large shared services department and took the company to “European Employer of Choice” in its sector. David moved to Tesco Stores in November 2000 as Group Resourcing Director and was quickly given the additional accountability of Corporate HR Director. In May 2005 David joined McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd as Vice President of People, and in January 2007 was promoted to Senior Vice President, Chief People Officer – Northern Europe with responsibility for HR, Training, Education, and Customer Services. In July 2006 David was voted HR Director of the Year by readers of HR Magazine and in June 2007 he secured No.1 position in Personnel Today’s Top-40 HR Power Players list. In July 2007 he was given an honorary doctorate in Business Administration by Manchester Metropolitan University Business School.
Alex joined BT as Group Human Resources Director in July 2002. Prior to this Alex was the Senior Vice President Human Resources for ICI for two years. He previously worked for Diageo, where he was HR Director for Guinness, as well as Managing Director of its Continental European Business. Prior to his career with Guinness, he worked for 10 years for the Ford Motor Company and then spent 12 years with Grand Metropolitan working in the Brewery, Retail and International Drinks Divisions. In his current role, reporting to Ben Verwaayen, BT’s group Chief Executive, Alex is responsible for HR excellence across the BT group with functional responsibility for the HR Directors of BT’s various lines of business covering the international and UK environments. In addition, he has specific responsibility for organisation development and the executive development of senior management throughout the group, including high potential managers to help build BT’s future capability with particular emphasis on inspirational leadership. He is also responsible for executive compensation and overall international compensation benefits, as well as developing a coherent HR strategy for the group which directly contributes to BT’s ongoing evolution and success in the world’s most dynamic industry. Alex instigated, and is leading, a major programme to transform the HR function in BT to increase further its commercial connectivity and move towards its vision of ‘People experts at the heart of change.’
Gary Kildare is Vice President of HR Global Business Services for IBM Europe across more than 50 countries. Global Business Services is IBM's fastest growing consulting, services and business innovation unit. Mr Kildare's recent achievements have included responsibility for implementing a new HR Model across Europe, transforming HR into a globally integrated service function, and setting up a community of HR practitioners across Europe. Mr Kildare has over 20 years of experience in leading and managing people. He is an internationalist having worked at country, geography and global level as well as living in many countries across the globe. He is a member of the Global IBM HR Strategy Board and a champion for Diversity and Inclusion. He is particularly passionate about driving improvements in organisational culture and employee commitment, major international business transformation, acquisitions, talent and change management and securing competitive business advantage through people. Mr. Kildare was appointed to his first leadership role in 1989 as HR Leader for IBM’s Software Research and Development Laboratory in Winchester. Since then he has held senior management positions across multiple HR disciplines including Talent management, Compensation, Acquisitions, Outsourcing and HR Strategy.
Karren is now known as the first woman in football. She has been Managing Director of Birmingham City Football Club since 1993 and has turned the Club’s fortunes around. In February 1997 the Club launched on the Stock market valued at the time of float at £25,000,000; she was the youngest Managing Director of a PLC in the UK. During the past years Karren has increased the average gate of the Club from 6,000 to a sell out capacity of over 30,000. Karren has attracted much media attention in her position, and was the subject of an hour long documentary ‘Inside Story’ - The Real Life Manageress’ shown on BBC 1. Karren has written four books; a factual account of her first season at Birmingham City, ‘Brady plays the Blues’ two novels, ‘United’ and ‘Trophy Wives’ and her latest book ‘Playing to Win’ is about successful women in business. She was voted by Cosmopolitan as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world and in 2004 and again this year attended The Queen’s lunch for Women Achievers and Business Leaders. She was acknowledged as one of the most influential women in Britain by the Daily Mail and voted as one of Britain’s Most Inspriational Women by Good Housekeeping magazine. In November 2006 she won the Cosmopolitan Woman of the Year, in the category of Women Who Have Changed the World.

Nicholas J Higgins is Dean of The International School of Human Capital Management and founder and CEO of VaLUENTiS, based in London. He is a recognised expert in organisational performance and human capital management, having worked with many top organisations in both public and private sectors. John Taylor joined Acas in 2001 as its first Chief Executive having been part of the team in the mid 1970s which set up the modern service. John’s background is in the public sector where he has been involved in training, economic development, rural development and employment relations. He has been a member of numerous taskforces, a German Marshall Fellowship Scholar to the USA, a rural development expert member of a UK Delegation to the former USSR and was recently admitted a companion of the Chartered Management Institute. He is a Board Member of the Quality Improvement Agency, the Sector Skills Council for Government and a Governor of Thames Valley University.At the HR Directors summit John will talk on changes in dispute resolution and the balance of power between deregulation and individual rights.
Siân Thomas is deputy director at NHS Employers, driving key work areas including workforce planning and productivity, recruitment and retention, equality and diversity. Among her current priorities are co-ordinating NHS Employers’ contribution to helping newly qualified healthcare professionals find their first job, providing employer input on Modernising Medical Careers and supporting trusts on the workforce implications of meeting the 18 week wait target. The Association of Healthcare Human Resource Management named Siân HR Director of the Year in 2004, recognising her contribution to reducing staff turnover and more efficient recruitment at the trust. A key focus of Siân’s work is ensuring that NHS Jobs delivers a high quality, cost-effective recruitment service that also functions as a key tool for workforce planning and management. Among the top five UK jobs websites, it delivers estimated savings of £40 million in advertising and administration costs each year and has become a valuable asset for the NHS. Siân will discuss the shared services project for NHS Employers and the changes this has made to the largest employer in Europe.
Martin Tiplady was appointed director of human resources of the Metropolitan Police Service in December 2001. Prior to that, he was group head of human resources (The Berkeley Group plc 1999 – 2001), director of human resources (Westminster Health Care Holdings Plc 1995 – 1999) and director of personnel (The Housing Corporation 1987 – 1995). Martin Tiplady has a Diploma in Management Studies. He was educated in Chelmsford, Essex and grew up in local government, which he entered in 1969. He left local government in 1987 as Assistant Director of Social Services (LB Haringey). He is a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers and is the Deputy Chair of the ACPO Workforce Modernisation and Development portfolio. He is a member of various HR think tanks and review bodies. In November 2004, he was named by The Daily Telegraph as ‘Personnel Director of the Year’. He is regularly named by the HR press as one of the most influential people in Human Resources. Martin Tiplady is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD. He was appointed a vice president of the CIPD in October 2006 and is also a business fellow at Roffey Park Business Institute. He is a member of the MBA Advisory Board for the University of Westminster.
Matthew Brearley was appointed UK HR Director at Vodafone in 2006, a role that enabled him to apply his wealth of commercial experience in driving business performance through coherent and innovative people strategies. Matthew worked for 2 years as an Internal Change Consultant for Associated British Foods, before joining retail giant B&Q Plc in 1995 as HR consultant, progressing to Director of Retail HR within a seven year timeframe. In 2002, he embarked on a new challenge as Director of HR at leading UK retailer, Marks and Spencer Plc. He was an integral member of the Marks and Spencer leadership team through a period of much publicised business recovery and growth strategy. His role involved overseeing the People Strategy and transformation of HR for a workforce of 57,000 employees across 320 stores. With a strong desire to keep learning, he is currently applying his skills and experience to drive performance at Vodafone.
Anne’s career has been broad, varied and unusual. Previously of IBM Business Consulting Services, Europe she has recently been appointed Global Head of Human Resources at CMC Markets in The City of London. Through a unique combination of Business Management, Human Resources and Consulting in an international context, she brings extensive experience of driving unique people strategies in prestigious organisations. Now operating for the first time in a sector not always recognised for its focus on people, Anne now plans to design and develop an HR agenda that brings true differentiation in the market. One of her current goals is to build a exciting employment proposition to attract and motivate the best and brightest in the industry. She is passionate about achieving true business results and competitive edge through good people. She is active in many international networks and is renowned for her innovative and practical approach to the advancement of women both in and out of the work place.
Dev Raval has been the Group head of Reward at BSkyB since 2004. Reward is used at Sky has a key lever to better align people to the company’s strategy and to engage people in creating a culture that fits Sky’s values. A number of improvements and additions to Sky reward package in the time that Dev has been at Sky. These have included a new long term incentive plan, a new approach to encouraging and growing the quality of recognition as well as a number of changes to the benefits package. The Sky Choices programme was one of these new additions. Sky Choices has echoed the company brand as well as reinforcing the Sky’s climate change initiative, “The Bigger Picture”. Prior to Sky, Dev has worked in senior reward roles at Vodafone, GlaxoSmithKiline and Citigroup.
David Russell has worked within human resources for over 25 years in the leisure, service and manufacturing sectors. The common theme has been, highly people intensive businesses, where customer service has been paramount and where the management of labour costs are a significant factor to the delivery of bottom line profits. Machines will not replace people! He is an HR generalist, always striving to work closely with line management to deliver pragmatic business solutions. After an initial period in hotels and contract catering, he spent nine years within Alpha Airports Group, latterly as Human Resources Director for the airline catering division. Following a period as Divisional HR Director for Courtaulds Textiles, David joined William Hill, as Group Human Resources Director, in March 2001, just prior to the successful launch of the business on the London Stock Market.
Adrian Moorhouse is Lane4’s Managing Director and Co-founder. He draws upon his own experience of high performance in both sport and business to shape Lane4 as an organisation and drive the company’s international growth, whilst ensuring the maintenance of strong client relationships and delivery of high quality products. Adrian won an Olympic Gold medal in swimming in 1988 and was world number one in his event for 6 consecutive years. He is co-author of the book ‘Developing Mental Toughness’ which was published in 2007.
Karen Green led the highly successful Front Line Manager Programme based at the Broughton Airbus Plant. She was responsible for the implementation of the Management Development Programme and ensuring alignment and integration with the Airbus Production System and Blue Sky Vision. The programme itself has attracted considerable interest in the L&D sector as a demonstration of a number of key practices and is being included as a major case study in a forthcoming core CIPD test on Learning and Development. Karen has since progressed within Airbus managing a number of change management positions and is now the Organisation Development Manager for the UK.
Simon has over 20 years generalist human resources experience in the Retail and leisure industries. He is currently Head of HR at William Hill responsible for the Company’s Telephone & Interactive businesses and various support functions. He has worked across the whole William Hill business and has been involved in some of the major projects that have transformed the business in recent years. In particular, the reorganisation of the Company’s Retail division following the acquisition of Stanley Racing and the implementation of the ‘Retail Goal’ (the strategic vision for the Retail business) alongside the introduction of Epos technology throughout the Retail estate, which has completely reshaped the business from both a customer and employee perspective. On leaving University and prior to joining William Hill Simon worked for Tesco in various HR and Line Management roles, primarily within their Distribution business.
Kirsten has a degree in Business Law and Administration. Kirsten has extensive experience in the implementation of complex business solutions and has played an integral part of the delivery of bespoke services to a number of the largest employers in the UK. Kirsten is currently spearheading the development of a Corporate Benefits Platform which we believe will shape the future of the corporate benefit packages offered by the leading employers of choice and is using her experience of the group pensions market and employee communication and education to shape this development. Kirsten has travelled extensively and is currently working with our joint organisation in Germany to progress the development of their corporate proposition.
Stefan Corbanie

Stefan is the Senior Office Partner of Eversheds in Brussels. He is also responsible for the firm’s employment practice in Belgium. He coordinates Eversheds’ international HR offering. His expertise covers all aspects of individual and collective employment law as well as change management issues. He has considerable experience working with international businesses at both Belgian and pan-European level, involving cross-border operations, with a focus on information and consultation of employees' representatives and collective bargaining at the occasion of company restructurings. Stefan was admitted as a lawyer at the Brussels Bar in 1996. In 1998 he was appointed as an academic assistant at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. In October 2003 he was appointed Deputy Judge at the Brussels' Labour Tribunal.
Wendy Brooks is a Director of the Hemsley Fraser Group. She works with strategic clients on innovative engagements and leads Hemsley Fraser’s research and development initiative around key priorities in the learning and development professional practice. Her background is in leadership development and change management, with a particular focus on customer centric change and employee engagement. Her sector experience is in engineering, financial services and retail. Wendy regularly publishes and speaks, with an emphasis on practical approaches to delivering results, and facilitates working sessions with boards and senior teams.
Simon is Head of Leadership Development for Royal Mail Group. His diverse career has spanned a variety of roles including Director of Operations, Organisational Development, Consultancy and change management. His career started in Local Government and the public sector where he led large scale organisational change programmes and was responsible for creating policy. A change of direction followed with the transition to consultancy, working across a variety of industries delivering strategic projects to businesses operating in highly competitive markets. In 2004, Simon joined Post Office Ltd where he was Head of Organisational Development until he took up his current post in 2006.
Trish‘s 14-year career path has involved a mix of marketing, sales, internal communications and planning roles in both corporate and consultancy environments. She moved onto the Board of Creative Direction in 2002 following a six year stint in both the UK and Europe with technology giant Hewlett Packard and is currently responsible for both the Planning and Business Development for the agency. She is also a Board member of the Women Writers Network.
Dianah Worman directs the Institute’s diversity research programme and leads the development of good practice guidance on diversity. She serves on national level advisory boards and leads the Institute’s public policy work on diversity. Her current agenda includes ground-breaking research on managing diversity, designed to raise awareness about diversity and stimulate thinking about sensible changes in employer’s approaches to the employment and development of people at work. She is currently a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on Age sponsored by the DTI, the DWP Age Partnership Group and the Advisory Board set up by the Commission for Race Equality to revise the Code of Practice on the Race Relations Act.
Dr. Wright qualified in medicine at the Middlesex Hospital, London, in 1976. Following a period in hospital based medicine, he became a partner in a general practice. During that time he developed a parallel practice providing an occupational health service to local companies. In 1988 he left general practice to concentrate on occupational medicine. . Over time he has developed the view that, whilst ‘traditional’ occupational health practice remains important in many areas, increasing knowledge allows most physical occupational health risks to be controlled at source, and that the best return on investment for most companies can be derived from improving the overall wellness of all their employees. This provides a shared benefit, of improved health and performance in all areas of their life for the employee, and improved employee performance at work for the employer.
Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines designs, develops and manufactures high performance racing engines. Mark is a member of the Executive Management Team and has responsibility for the acquisition of new business and the improvement of internal business performance. Mark also has responsibility for special projects; motivating project teams with the help of easy-to-use project management tools has been a key part of this role. Mark has spent his career in motor racing and race engines and was previously Formula One Development Manager at Mercedes-Ilmor, where he managed a cultural change programme from ‘design and make’ to a fully integrated, development-led approach. Other roles have included time spent with Ricardo Consulting Engineers, Ford Motor Company and Cosworth Engineering.
Sue joined Sainsbury’s as Head of Leadership Development in 2006. Her passion for development was first ignited whilst training cabin crew and pilots at British Airways where she started her working life initially as a stewardess including a spell on Concorde. Since leaving BA in 1998 her career has really taken off through a period of working freelance to a number of key learning and development roles including heading up training at O2 Retail and Marks and Spencer before landing at Sainsbury’s. Sue sees talent management as a key deliverable for HR, an opportunity to really add value both to individuals and the organisation and will talk about one of the ways in which Sainsbury’s is rising to the challenge.
Elin is an employment law specialist with many years’ experience of both employment litigation and strategic advice. Most of her clients are employers. Elin is a trained mediator and is a fervent believer in resolving disputes quickly, cost effectively and where appropriate confidentially. A significant proportion of Elin’s work involves training, both internally within client companies and externally via joint ventures with organisations. Also Elin and the senior members of the team provide valuable hands-on support to clients in internal disciplinary and grievance matters. Elin Pinnell wins over clients for “not wasting their time” by “giving them all they need to know in as concise a way as possible.” She has been involved in major workforce reorganisations, tribunal representations, TUPE and employment seminars.
Christopher is recognised as a leader in his field by Legal 500 which says he has "proven expertise in employment work with regular appearances in the EAT". He receives numerous plaudits from clients and "does not entertain time wasting". Chambers & Partners recognised Christopher as a leader in his field for commercial litigation and clients say he is "superb and clever" and "perfect for a difficult case". Christopher is also a chairman of the Employment Tribunals, appointed to the Birmingham region. Christopher trained in Cardiff and at Simmons & Simmons in London, then became a partner in Cardiff firm Edward Lewis & Co in 1989 before founding the firm that became Capital Law.

Peter joined Invigor8 in 2000 having moved from his position of CEO of Lifeskills International. He is a strategic, marketing and employee engagement specialist working with top teams and employees from clients such as Abbey National, Johnson & Johnson, Nectar and Mothercare.
Octavius is responsible for ensuring that The Mind Gym delivers on its promise: to help people use their minds more effectively so that they can get more out of their lives and give more to others. In his life before The Mind Gym, Octavius led the Sales & Marketing effort at employee communication consultancy Smythe Dorward Lambert as it grew from 9 people to 100 (and was sold to Omnicom in 1996). Dr. David Wright has an extensive background in occupational medicine. He served in the Army for 20 years in a wide variety of posts at regimental, formation and Ministry of Defence level. Since leaving the Army he has worked as a senior occupational physician in the railways and subsequently the Post Office before transferring to Atos Healthcare as Chief Occupational Physician.
Derek was educated in Northern Ireland and graduated from the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham. Subsequently he has worked at a number of universities in both the UK and USA. Prior to his appointment as Chief Executive of Foundation Degree Forward he was a Dean for Academic Collaboration and worked with large employers, such as JCB, to create degree level programmes tailored to their workforce development requirements. As Chief Executive of Foundation Degree Forward, Derek has led initiatives with organisations such as Regional Development Agencies, the Skills for Business Network and the British Chambers of Commerce to enhance partnership working between employers, universities and colleges and stimulate higher education provision that directly meets industry and business needs. Most recently he has led collaborative partnerships with major employers such as Tesco, the RAF and the NHS to develop bespoke Foundation degrees that advance the knowledge and skills of their workforces.
Kevin is Managing Director of Performance Coaching International and one of the UK's leading Executive Performance Coaches. Originally a highly successful sales and operational director, Kevin has held various HR board level roles within the financial services sector. He is a leadership development specialist delivering one-on-one and group sessions to senior executives from major companies in the UK, Europe and the US. When MDK was acquired by TMP Worldwide in the mid 1990s, Andrew took on a three year tenure as Chief Executive, implementing and driving the company’s acquisition strategy in the United Kindgom. Andrew has significant online experience first launching monster.co.uk in 1996, at the very beginning of the internet recruitment market in Europe, before leading Monster’s expansion across Europe, and subsequently as Managing Director for Monster Europe.

Vincent Belliveau is Cornerstone OnDemand's General Manager of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He is responsible for overseeing all of Cornerstone's European operations including sales and marketing, implementation, services and support. Prior to joining Cornerstone OnDemand, Belliveau served as the North East Europe Director of IBM's Master Data Management (MDM) and Information Integration Solutions. He was responsible for successfully integrating and growing several key acquisitions in IBM's portfolio, including Trigo, DWL, SRD, LAS and Ascential, structuring and expanding the organization, and driving the local go-to-market strategy and execution. Previously, Belliveau served as IBM's EMEA Sales Director for WebSphere Product Center Software (formerly known as Trigo), where he grew the client base, developed key routes to markets and increased license sales. Vincent was the Sales Director at Trigo prior to being acquired by IBM. Belliveau demonstrated entrepreneurship when he launched and managed an agency for Fonorola, a Canadian telecommunications service provider. Sprint Canada ultimately acquired the customer base of his agency. Belliveau honed his management consulting and business analysis skills while at McKinsey & Company. Vincent received his Commerce Baccalaureate (B.Com) from McGill University, where he majored in accounting and finance.
Owen is a partner in our human resources practice group and has a wide range of employment law expertise. Leading the group on age discrimination for the past three years he has advised many large UK employers on their strategy to deal with age equality issues. He also has particular experience in trade union recognition, industrial action cases, disability discrimination law and has taken a case on equal pensions as far as the European Court of Justice.
